In order to solve this bottleneck problem that has plagued plant pathology and breeding for a long time, the He Zuhua team of the Shanghai Institute of Plant Physiology and Ecology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, in cooperation with breeders, began to extensively screen blast-resistant germplasm in 2002, and identified a new broad-spectrum blast-resistant site Pigm from breeding materials originating from Chinese farm varieties. Then they spent another 10 years systematically analyzing the functional mechanism of this new site. The research results were published online in the industry authoritative journal "Science" on February 2.
According to experts, it is usually difficult to have both disease resistance and yield, such as "fish and bear's paw". Enhancing disease resistance can easily lead to reduced yield. The research results obtained by He Zuhua's team broke through this bottleneck.
He Zuhua introduced that Pigm has lasting resistance to plague, which is better than some related genes isolated in the world. It is resistant to disease and does not affect the final yield.
It is reported that this new gene locus has been discovered and has been applied to rice disease resistance molecular breeding by more than 30 seed companies and breeding units in China.
