Yuan Longping's team is studying the third generation of breeding methods to develop hybrid rice.

Yuan Longping recently revealed that the hybrid rice research center of Hunan Province is actively studying the third generation breeding method. Because it is compatible with the advantages of the first two generations, this means that hybrid rice with higher yield, high quality and better resistance will be cultivated.
The first generation of hybrid rice adopts the "three-line method", which forms a hybrid generation through sterile lines, maintainer lines and restorer lines. This method has complex procedures, many seed production links, high cost, low probability of selecting good combinations, and it is difficult to solve the contradiction between high yield and high quality of hybrid rice. The second generation of breeding method is the "two-line method", that is, the use of sterile lines and recovery lines to achieve the freedom of mating, the probability of breeding good varieties is much higher than the three-line method. At present, China's hybrid rice breeding generally adopts the second generation method, has been selected to yield more than 1000kg per mu, rice quality to reach the national second-class high-quality rice standard of Y two excellent 900 as the representative of the quantity and quality of the same variety.
"But the second generation breeding method also has certain deficiency." Zhang Yuzhu, deputy director of the Hunan Hybrid Rice Research Center, introduced that the two-line method of breeding is easily affected by temperature and the risk of seed production is greater. It usually causes great losses to seed enterprises, and if it is not identified, it will also affect the production of farmers.
Yuan Longping introduced that China's third-generation hybrid rice uses engineering sterile lines as genetic tools. It has the advantages of stable fertility of the "three-line method" and free mating of the "two-line method". The biggest feature is that the female parent is not affected by the environment., Seed production is safe, and mating is free, and more excellent varieties can be cultivated.
"In areas with more people and less land, high yield is the main breeding goal, and high yield genes can be selected. For areas susceptible to rice blast, disease resistance genes can be introduced to continuously improve disease resistance. In order to cultivate hybrid rice with better comprehensive characteristics such as higher yield, higher quality and higher resistance, we can optimize the combination of genes with high yield, high quality, good resistance and strong adaptability, so that the quantity and quality of hybrid rice can rise to a new level." Zhang Yuzhu said.
